Programs & Activities

The activities of the Club are designed to provide intellectual stimulation, foster personal growth and encourage friendship among our members

Our core activities are listed below, while others are added at the request of our members. Members serve on committees to plan programs, trips and events, and oversee our historic clubhouse. It is through participating in club activities, enjoying fine cuisine at Wednesday luncheons, and serving on committees that our members cultivate the lasting friendships that are the hallmark of belonging to The Present Day Club.

  • Wednesday Luncheons
    • The Club's signature program is a series of weekly luncheon presentations. On Wednesdays, from September until mid-June, Present Day welcomes outstanding speakers and performers who offer ideas and entertainment in a variety of formats. During 2015-2016 our guest-lecturers included Emmy-winning TV programmers, Broadway theater luminaries, university professors, journalists, historians, coaches, award-winning authors, a Presidential niece, and even a traveler into space.

  • Art Exhibits
    • The spacious ballroom features gallery space for renowned local artists whose works are exhibited for extended periods. Complimentary exhibit openings are held regularly. Artists of various media including photography have been featured.
  • Theater Trips
    • Several times during the year, the Club sponsors bus trips to attend Wednesday matinees of some of Broadway’s finest productions.  Past shows have included The Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, the King and I, Beautiful, and Hamilton.
  • Guided Day Trips
    • At least twice during the year, the Club arranges day trips specifically designed for our members. It may be a guided tour of a special museum exhibit, an historic site, or a behind-the-scenes tour.  Lunch at an excellent restaurant is included. Past trips have included a private tour of the Central Park Zoo, historic sites in Harlem, and Longwood Gardens.

  • Bridge
    • Sanctioned duplicate bridge is held once a week for intermediate and advanced players. For all players, Monday "social" bridge is offered twice a month.
  • Book Club
    • This group meets at the Club once a month for lunch, followed by a discussion of the book selected for reading that month.
  • Current Events Study Group
    • This group meets once a month to focus on a topic of interest relevant to our times such as Urban Renewal, Migration and Immigration.
