The Present Day Club

The activities of the Club provide intellectual stimulation, foster personal growth and encourage friendship amongst our members.  Our core activities include:

EinsteinWednesday luncheons:  Every Wednesday from September until mid-June a guest speaker follows a luncheon. Our location in a university town with close proximity to New York City and Philadelphia gives us access to speakers who are both nationally and locally recognized for their expertise and personal achievements. Just a few examples are: Joyce Carol Oates, John Seward Johnson II, Norman Thomas, Bertrand Russell, Ashley Montagu, Ayn Rand, Christine Todd Whitman, and Roger Sessions. Probably one of the most notable Club events was held on February 3, 1941 when Albert Einstein appeared on our stage to play his violin, accompanied by Gaby Casadesus!

Bridge:  An ACBL sanctioned game is held once a week followed by a mini lesson by the Director. Throughout the year, members may participate in a round-robin tournament.

Theater trips:  Several times during the year we arrange bus trips to attend Wednesday matinees of some of Broadway’s finest productions. We arrive in New York City in time to have a leisurely lunch before the theater.

Guided day trips:  A day trip is planned at least twice during the year. It may be to a special museum exhibit with our own guide, an historical site, or a behind-the-scenes tour.  Lunch at an excellent local restaurant is included.

Book club: This group meets at the Club once a month for lunch, followed by a discussion of the book selected for reading that month.

LunchWhile these are our core activities, others are added at the request of our members. For example, in previous years there have been mini-courses on antiques and lessons on needlework, and we currently have an enthusiastic Mahjongg group that meets weekly.

Many members also serve on committees to plan programs, trips and events, and oversee the decoration and maintenance of our historic clubhouse. It is through participating in club activities, enjoying fine cuisine at Wednesday luncheons, and serving on committees that our Club members cultivate lasting friendships. It is these friendships that make membership in the Club especially rewarding.
